Cargo Insurance & Claims

Carrier liability and cargo insurance are not the same thing. Here's the difference, and what to do if something goes wrong.

Carrier Liability Is Not Insurance

Ocean and air carriers operate under liability limits set by international convention and their own tariffs, often calculated per kilogram or per package, not by the actual value of your cargo. On a high-value shipment, that limit can be a small fraction of what your goods are actually worth. Our Standard Trading Conditions outline these limits in detail.

Cargo insurance closes that gap. It covers the declared value of your goods against loss or damage during transit, regardless of whether the carrier is found liable.

What Cargo Insurance Typically Covers

  • Physical loss or damage during ocean, air, or inland transport, including loading and unloading.
  • General average contributions, a maritime rule that can make you liable for a share of losses even if your own cargo is undamaged.
  • Total loss events, such as a vessel casualty, that carrier liability limits would only partially cover.

Exact coverage, exclusions, and premiums depend on the policy and underwriter. We can help connect you with cargo insurance for your shipment; we do not underwrite policies ourselves.

How to File a Claim

  1. Inspect cargo immediately on delivery and note any visible damage on the delivery receipt before signing.
  2. Photograph the damage and packaging before anything is moved or discarded.
  3. Notify us in writing as soon as possible — visible damage should be reported within 3 business days, and concealed damage within 30 days of delivery, per our Standard Trading Conditions.
  4. We'll help you file the claim with the responsible carrier and/or insurer and coordinate any documentation they require.
